Ninjas for Neutrality

Friday, April 27th, 2007

This is a video that once again explains the idea of net neutrality. It has a pretty impressive metaphor. Net neutrality, apparently, is similar to watching the girl at “Hot Dog on a Stick” make lemonade…somewhat humorous…and strange. Along with the video and metaphor, there are some ways to help protect network neutrality, including email addresses and additional websites such as savetheinternet.com

But, I Thought They Were the Good Guys…?

Friday, April 27th, 2007

This is the most interesting portrayal I have seen of the “other side” of the Net Neutrality issue. It sheds a negative light on Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft–all of which we have thought of as “good guys” in the battle for NN. If you click on the link on the lower left side after the video plays, it will take you to a website that is the counterpart to “savetheinternet.” “Hands Off the Internet” is a blog for people to write their thoughts and explain different perspectives of the heavily weighted argument.

Mapping it Out

This video explains Net Neutrality as well and has diagrams to help better understand the roles that each provider plays in the consumer’s view of the internet. (I can’t get the video posted directly).

Total Overview of Net Neutrality

Friday, April 27th, 2007

This article gives a brief overview of the concept of network neutrality. Not only does it discuss the issue of internet quality from the past, present, and in the future, it also discusses some of the current legislative ideas both for and against net neutrality.

Election Coverage

Friday, April 27th, 2007

The 2008 presidential election is a long way off. But this fact doesn’t keep news outlets from using inappropriate measures to “gauge” American public opinion. The media watchdog group FAIR has issued a media advisory on the faulty logic of such reporting–and the consequences this has on one of our most fundamental democratic processes–our right to vote. Read the advisory here.

Japan is also facing net neutrality

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

The Japanese government has set up a panel to study the idea of net neutrality last November. They are going to make a final report by July this year, whether some form of net neutrality requirements should be adopted or not. It certainly is a global issue. The article is here.

The FCC Wants to Kill Your TV

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

In following up with a little bit what we discused today about televsion. As we all now know it is national turn you TV off week. Today we discussed regulating what children watched on television by making more explicit television such as The Sopranos on HBO cost extra to by. This way if you didn’t want to expose your child to the show you wouldn’t have to purchase it. In response to increased violence on TV the FCC repsonded in 2000 by requiring evry televsion made to include a V chip. This V chip would allow parents to block shows on television that were to violent or explicit. A study in 2004 concluded that the FCC failed in this attempt. It determined that only 20% of parents actually ever used the V chip. As a reuslt, the FCC needs to find another solution or exposure of adult content to children will only get worse. You can access the article by clicking here.
